The Hills by The Weeknd
Abel Tesfaye, known to many as The Weeknd, surfaced in 2011 with his debut mixtape titled House of Balloons but his single “Earned It” lived on the official soundtrack for the 2015 Fifty Shades of Grey movie and has made him the poster boy for R&B. He has garnered attention with his somber melodies filled with drug references and sexual longing and has stayed true to this formula for success. One of his latest tracks, “The Hills”, was initially premiered during his Coachella performance in April and follows the blueprint that Abel has created to a T.
All In by Kehlani & Mr. Carmack
20-year old R&B up-and-comer Kehlani has been building up a buzz within the genre as her latest project, You Should Be Here, continues to amass attention. This track, “All In”, is not apart of her mixtape but rather is a collaboration with producer Mr. Carmack for Yours Truly & adidas originals’ “Songs From Scratch” series. Kehlani provides her perspective on the heartfelt turning point of a relationship where things begin to get defined as Mr. Carmack’s slow burning production makes you wish the two worked together more often.
I’m Up by Omarion ft Kid Ink & French Montana
Omarion’s “Post To Be” became his first track in five years to make an impact on the radio charts and peaked at #13 on Billboard’s Top 100. Looking to build off of this success, Omarion has released “I’m Up” that features Kid Ink and French Montana as well as west-coast production from Nic Nac who has produced hits for Chris Brown such as “Ayo” and “Loyal”. This single is the first from Omarion’s upcoming 5th studio album and is a must for any summer playlist.
Wanna Be Cool by Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment ft Big Sean, Jeremih & KYLE
Chance The Rapper attracted a maximum capacity crowd of Ohio State students in October 2014 as he put on a high-energy performance featuring tracks from his “Acid Rap” and “10 Day” projects, but his latest work comes in collaboration with the Social Experiment. The band supports him at all his shows and is a cross-genre collaboration with his friends. Donnie Trumpet & The Social Experiment’s debut project, Surf, was recently released at the end of May and is a must listen from start to finish that has drawn comparisons of sounding like the scoring of a major motion picture film. “Wanna Be Cool” is the fifth track on this unique project and features Big Sean, Jeremih, KYLE, and Chance himself as they convey the idea that being true to one’s self is the ultimate way to be cool.
21 by Hunter Hayes
Country artist Hunter Hayes is best known for hit tracks “Wanted” and “I Want Crazy” and is currently touring the nation this summer with Lady Antebellum and Sam Hunt. “21” is the lead single from Hunter’s forthcoming studio album and serves as a summer anthem as he perfectly captures the feeling of freedom and excitement of whatever’s next that come with being 21 years old.
In My Head by Galantis
Galantis is a duo of Swedish superstar producers Christian Karlsson and Linus Eklow that are best known for their work with groups Miike Snow and Style of Eye. They recently released their debut album, Pharmacy, after the success of lead singles “Runaway (U & I)” and “Peanut Butter Jelly”. “In My Head” adds to the growing catalog of hits from Galantis and proves that the group has discovered their niche in a place where pop meets electronic music.
