Welcome to OUABeats! This column will be posted every other Monday and provide you with songs to get you through the week while also providing insight as to what the members of OUAB are currently listening to. Each post will feature tracks from varying genres and contain brief descriptions of the artist and why we chose to include that particular song. In addition, we will have an OUAB Spotify playlist that will feature all of the songs that we discuss here that are available on the platform as well as other tracks that we think you should check out!

No Chill by Vic Mensa ft Skrillex

Hailing from Chicago, Vic Mensa is one of the most promising up-and-coming artists in hip-hop and has been all over the radio and charts this summer with his “U Mad” collaboration featuring Kanye West. His highly-anticipated debut studio album, Traffic, is due out later this year but in the meantime he has released “No Chill” to hold fans over. This single features production by Skrillex and Jahlil Beats while Vic displays his creative lyricism and drops humble-brags.

Where Ya At by Future ft Drake

After the release of his second studio album, Honest, Future felt he needed to get back to his mixtape roots and subsequently released three of the most talked about projects in a span of five months. These mixtapes have spawned numerous radio hits while getting Future back to the top of his game and leading up to the release of his third studio album, DS 2. “Where Ya At” is the sole track on the project that has a feature and Drake and Future team up on an anthem that reiterates the motto of no new friends.

New Americana by Halsey

Halsey is a twenty year old indie pop recording artist who got her start by posting cover song videos to YouTube and then publishing her own work onto SoundCloud. She released her debut EP in late-October 2014 and her first full album, Badlands, is scheduled to hit stores on August 28th, 2015. “New Americana” is a track that epitomizes Halsey’s sound while she sings about “a generation that is unafraid of diversity”.

Leave a Trace by CHVRCHES

The debut studio album of Scottish synthpop group CHVRCHES, The Bones of What You Believe, was released in 2013 and spawned hit singles such as “The Mother We Share”, “Recover” and “Gun”. Almost two years to the date later, CHVRCHES is scheduled to release their follow-up project in the form of their second studio album, Every Open Eye. “Leave a Trace” is the second-single from this upcoming tape and is about the “middle finger mic-drop time in a relationship where you have decided there is no point to having this conversation anyways”.

Anything Goes by Florida Georgia Line

Florida Georgia Line has a lengthy catalog with summer themed hits such as “Cruise”, “This Is How We Roll”, and “Sippin’ On Fire”. Their second studio album, Anything Goes, was released in October 2014 and the single of the same title is another summer anthem that is currently making its way up the Billboard charts.  “Anything Goes” puts on display the lyricism of the duo as they provide their take on the popular themes of country music.

Roses by The Chainsmokers

The Chainsmokers broke onto the EDM scene with their hit single “#SELFIE” in early 2014 and although they have yet to release a full-length project, the duo has continuously released hit singles. With tracks such as “Kanye” and “Let You Go”, the group has remained a presence in the electro house genre. One of their newest singles, “Roses”, is a feel-good track that is the perfect addition for your summer playlist.

I Just Wanna… by Elijah Blake ft DeJ Loaf

Elijah Blake is an R&B artist who has released three full-length projects but is best known for writing for superstars such as Rihanna and Usher. He co-wrote Usher’s number one R&B hit, “Climax”, but recently released his biggest track in the form of “I Just Wanna…”.  This single puts Elijah’s soothing vocals on display and the remix features budding female superstar DeJ Loaf who talks about overcoming a recent relationship.

It’s summer so go out and get your groove on and don’t forget to check out our Spotify account which features all of the songs above and from the past OUABeats posts!
